Mistakes can be a valuable learning opportunity and a chance to boost your career, says author and consultant Jay Heinrichs, who recommends these four steps.

1. Deliver the news yourself before anyone else. You control the message when you’re the first to deliver it.
2. Come with a plan in hand. People will be less concerned about your mistake when you follow its revelation with a great plan to make things right.
3. Focus on the future. Keep the conversation directed toward what is going to happen next, not what has already happened.
4. Resist the urge to apologize. Apologies draw attention back to the past. Also, not apologizing keeps you in a position of strength.
